Automating Sheet-to-PDF Workflows with Google Apps Script

Automating Sheet-to-PDF Workflows with Google Apps Script

A client needed a recurring, boring task solved: take rows from a Google Sheet, turn each one into a formatted PDF, save it to a Drive folder, and email it out — without anyone touching a spreadsheet by hand every week.

Google Apps Script turned out to be the right tool for this. It runs inside Google's own infrastructure, so there's no server to maintain, and it has first-class access to Sheets, Drive, and Gmail through simple APIs.

The core of the script reads a sheet, builds an HTML template per row, converts it to PDF, drops the file into a Drive folder, and sends it by email — all triggered on a time-based trigger or a simple "Generate" button in the sheet itself.

It's not glamorous work, but it's the kind of automation that actually saves someone a few hours every week, and that's usually worth more to a small business than a flashy feature nobody uses.
